Lady Antebellum’s Love Portrait
Words have an interesting way of entering our lives. Regardless of the medium, pattern or time they enter, words leave an impression. As a lover of all things related to the construction of words and there sequences, I often find the greatest joy when listening to music. Song lyrics have a way of expressing so much in so few frames; an entire event, feeling or space in time can be elegantly captured in 20 lines, give or take a few. Isn’t that incredible?
Prior to purchasing Lady Antebellum’s latest CD, Own the Night, there was much anticipated allure around what exactly this trio was going to showcase in their third album. What Lady Antebellum brought us is pure romantic poetry. This 12 song album is a series of songs that paint a portrait of the universal human emotions that are showcased in the triumphs and failures of life’s biggest quests: finding love. I am smitten from the first to the last track, I have visions of (hopefully soon) finding love and being as engulfed as Lady A is in: Singing Me Home, Heart of the World, Just a Kiss, Love I’ve Found in You and Friday Night. Or, if a relationship is to end, bowing out gracefully and letting my heart speak through: Cold As Stone, When You Were Mine, As You Turned Away, Somewhere Love Remains and Dancing Away With My Heart. Regardless though, I believe that Lady A’s motto of ‘owning the night’ is a motto that should be applied to everyday life, no?
Lady A had an incredible way of moving me with their words that I wanted to showcase my favorite lyrics:
Time is a thief I would rob- Heart of the World
If oil is the soul of the engine
Then wine is the drink of the gods
Forgiveness the road to redemption
Faith can still beat the odds- Heart of the WorldNo we can’t be friends
Cause I don’t think I could take seeing you and knowing where we’ve been
I hope you understand- As You Turn AwayA song on the radio’s talking about the love we made
I know just what she’s thinking and I can’t wait- Singing Me HomeWe woke under a blanket
All tangled up in skin
Not knowing in that moment
We’d never speak again- We Owned The Night -
